Bash problem

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have small technical program written in fortran. I compiled the
program and ran it ("program"). It does some calculations and prints the
results to the screen. The problem is that the numbers it prints to the
screen are wrong. When I run the same program using "program > a.dat"
the output is completely different to the one passed onto the terminal
and surprisingly correct. I need to explain why the two output is
completely different and why the one with > command gives the correct
result.

I am running bash on Redhat Linux 9.0. The bash version I believe is
2.05b.
