Hi Paul,

The only URL that I can think of offhand takes you to the Amazon presentation
of the book (but before you decide to forget family, friends and pressing
projects in order to dedicate all your time to this otherwise lofty goal, first
read the disclaimer below):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/013937681X/ref=sib_dp_pt/104-0800200-7403143#reader-link
- Disclaimer and Warnings:
1. By a really strange coincidence, of all the 360-odd pages Amazon should
choose a sample from they picked p71-76 range which happens to cover the
beginning of the "Using the Shell" chapter! Ironically, had they stretched the
range a couple of more pages, on page 77 starts "A digression on echo" segment
which ends on page 79 with the more or less famous McIlroy's (one of the
original Unix team members at Bell Labs) musings, "The UNIX and the Echo".
2. The section and Doug's little (half a page) whimsy does _not_ deal with my
problem (echo "$TMP") at all.
However, the reason my mind went to this passage originally was I thought it
interesting that since the most ancient times, people appear to have been
fascinated and forced to grapple with the implications of using the 'echo'
command alongside the proverbial line feeds.
If you'd still like to pursue this subject despite all this, I can at the very
least - if not going to my neighborhood library for a clean Xerox copy of the
missing pages -make a copy of my own (kinda dilapidated) book and send you the
missing pages (I'm sorely lacking a scanner at this point).
BTW, this 1984 book is still considered one of the best in the "industry", if
for no other reason than having been written by two of the brilliant founding
fathers of Unix and C. Very solid treatise to boot.
- The following is in the FWIW category.
>> ... echo will show the naked truth (splits and all).
> I think we're not using the word "split" the same way.
I had the same thing in mind after all. Sorry, my fault. I used "split" (a
bit too) loosely synonymous with "chunk" - I should have said,
"... naked truth (such as where the input can be split and all)".
However, I can be excused as having been under the influence of the sad
realization that had I known that 'echo $TMP' wouldn't tell me the whole story
(like 'echo "$TMP"') I may have stood a chance in this cruel world.
Come to think of it, as far as I can tell, the whole friggin' book does not
seem to touch this business ('echo' and params in or not in quotes) in any form
or shape. I may have gotten a break in life right then and there.
Many thanks again, best wishes,
