quick update: the alias workaround above doesn't really help, because now
there is an asymmetry between the "command" or alias '%' and the
job specifier for commands like kill.
I still can't use 'kill %' like before, and like in csh-based shells.
IMHO that's one more good reason to switch back to the old behaviour for plain
'%'.
