Yes, I encounter artificial problems often as I sometimes paste from
the X clip buffer whereas you all certainly type every character.
Or whatever. The spaces got in, now let's get them out so I can fit
more words on a command line.

Hurmf, what is this, education thru labor? What a 50's Mao era
solution. Might as well use DEL.

Well, now that things have settled down and there's nothing more to
do, might as well "add layer two, the comfort commands".
