Using the command line:
ps --no-headers -o"\%p \%t" -C"exim4"
via perl's backtick function. ps occasionally reports something like:
"31125 49710-06:28:15"
The process number is correct AFAIK, but the uptime is miles too big and seems 
to vary between: 49710-06:28:01 and 49710-06:28:15.

The Configuration Information originally sent to bug-bash@gnu.org was 
incorrect. The correct version is above.
My humble apologies.
