You're having one additional "\" ... change that to ...
status=`echo '-'| { ${GREP} -E -e 'a' >/dev/null 2>&1 ; echo $?; }`
or split to the next line ...
status=`echo '-'| { ${GREP} -E -e 'a\
' >/dev/null 2>&1 ; echo $?; }`
or remove the "\" altogether.
