thanks for the answer!

i think the C-r search is pretty useful, although it doesn't quite do 
the trick, it's much better than hitting the up-arrow zillions of 
times... however, mapping S+up and S+down doesn't seem to work. i'll 
have to look into my keyboard definition (seems to be somewhat broken, 
as it is a swiss german logitech multimedia thing...).
