How does bash determine $HOSTTYPE? Is it dependent on the version of bash installed - if I install i586 packages on an x86_64 platform, will $HOSTTYPE be i586? (I wouldn't've thought so, but I wanted to check.)

It's set from the `CONF_HOSTTYPE' define, which is passed to the
compiler in the top-level Makefile. It gets into the Makefile via
`configure', which substitutes the value it gets from config.{guess,sub}
or the --build and --host options.

(In short, "configure sets it." :-) )
