Letting compgen do the command substitution speeds it up considerably

$ TIMEFORMAT=%R
$ time compgen -W "`seq 1 500000`" 1794 >/dev/null
175.253
$ time compgen -W '`seq 1 500000`' 1794 >/dev/null
2.347
