There have been many updates on this. There have been a "fix" available for some time now on this list . It is now available as an official patch ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bash/bash-4.2-patches/bash42-029
Thank you. For someone like me who is not active in this project it seems it is not very easy to keep track of bugs, patches and releases. Is there an issue number/bug number of some sort for this particular issue that I could use for this purpose?
I hope the patch works well enough and that it will end up in Linux distros shortly.
