Nope:
~/1$ touch '[1]=x'
~/1$ bash -c 'a=( [1]=* ); echo "${a[@]}"'
[1]=x
~/1$ bash -c 'a=( [1]=asd ); echo "${a[@]}"'
asd
That's a bug though.
Just do
a=("*") or a=('*') or a=(\*)
