I agree, for this case I don't think $BASH_COMMAND suffices considering the
intention.

I can't imagine myself ever using it, but it seems like a reasonable feature
request to me. If POSIX doesn't say anything about it, I'm in favour of
implementing it in the most intuitive way (which, I think, is the way
proposed).
