This wouldn't, by any chance, be controllable in the Makefile with
these lines?:

# comment out for release
#DEBUG = -DDEBUG
#MALLOC_DEBUG = -DMALLOC_DEBUG

--- or is there some other check to see if "RELSTATUS" is empty???
(transmission works that way... if not a full release number, it
turns on debugging regardless of build options).
