There will be a fix for this in the next release of bash.

The current implementation is more oriented towards commands that do
display to stdout, in which case the shell needs to do full redisplay.
The fix I'm making will allow a command to return a special exit status
to indicate that the previous behavior is desired.

This won't really make a difference to people who don't use bind -x or
don't have multi-line prompts.
