BTW:

$ ltrace -e regcomp bash -c 'bs="\\"; [[ a =~ ${bs}[\.s ]]'
bash->regcomp(0x7fff4d48bef0, "\\[.s", 1)

I think it should be
 
bash->regcomp(0x7fff4d48bef0, "\\[\\.s", 1)
