I will have to see whether I can change the redisplay to either not need
or remove the space.

There is a big difference between `ls', which simply takes characters and
writes them to stdout, and an editor that has to keep track of where it
is on the screen, the effect of writing characters to the display, and
how much screen space those characters consume.
