I can't reproduce this with:

  address@hidden:~/src/gnu/bash$ bash --version | head -n1
  GNU bash, version 4.4.12(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu)
  address@hidden:~/src/gnu/bash$ xterm -version
  address@hidden:~/src/gnu/bash$ lsb_release -d
  Description:    Debian GNU/Linux 9.0 (stretch)

Can you reproduce the problem using a more recent version. Perphaps try
the `devel' branch from git?  <https://savannah.gnu.org/git/?group=bash>
