My linux box has 2 interfaces, internal & external, with
different domain names on each. While hostname
and hostname-f both return the shortname that is
common to both domain names, i.e.

foo.external.tld (on eth2)
foo.in.external.tld (on br0=bridge(eth0+eth5))
& hostname returns 'foo'
& domainname returns 'external.tld'.

My resolve.conf has domain set to 'in.external.tld'.
