You're right, it wouldn't work properly without a further tweak.
[tweak to gcc]

Shouldn't gas assume -mppc when no -m option was passed?
Why should I have to pass -mpcc when I call gas (directly, not via gcc), which I configured with --target=powerpc* ?
(linux-2.6.6 calls gas directly in arch/ppc/Makefile)
