Up until recently, my programs have linked fairly quickly. Of late, linking
now takes on the order a minute.

If you tell us what you changed we might be able to guess a reason.

Only a few files have been added. As a test, I rebuilt multiple older versions of our software.
I am positive these linked quickly. (Otherwise, I would have gone crazy trying to debug the
software.) The current link times are about the same as with the newest software, so I would
have to say something has changed on my linux box.

I have no idea if it has any relevance, but I was surprised by the large number of small writes (512 bytes,
1024 bytes) listed in the log of strace. I would think this would be expensive. Have I screwed up a
buffer size parameter somewhere?

I guess at worst, I can go back to my 8 year old SGI where the link time is 2 secs. :)
