The ar(1) man page says the following about -P:
P Use the full path name when matching names in the
archive. ar can not create an archive with a full
path name (such archives are not POSIX complaint),
but other archive creators can. [...]
I don't think it makes much sense to add an extension to ar(1) that allows users
to create non-POSIX compliant archives. The required behaviour is well
described in IEEE P1003.1, then I think that the current behaviour should be
considered correct. Users (including Makefiles) that invoke ar(1) should "not
do that".
