ld barfs when cross compiling for avr

I am getting the following error when building an application for avr
platform (atmega1281 MCU, to be specific)

region text is full (wsndemo.elf section .text)
BFD 2.17 internal error, aborting at ../../bfd/reloc.c line 445 in
