[Bug ld/9797] New: Simple linker script casues spurious error message

The simple linker script: 
"EXTERN (bah)"
causes the linker to fail with:
"syntax error"

The problem appears to be with the string "bah" specifically.

This is a regression from 2.15 and is present on the latest svn snapshot
