Note that altmacro syntax is not in effect when the bug exhibits itself. 
Furthermore, as discussed in the first paragraph of the bug report, additional
doublings of & had no effect: &, &&, &&&, and &&&& were all displayed as &. 
Attempts to separate the ampersands with backslashes failed as well.
