Thanks.  I can see differences but none of them seem relevant.  Unfortunately I
don't know what is going wrong.

You say that this has been happening for a few weeks now.  Would it be possible
to identify which patch to gold caused this to start happening?

Otherwise I think somebody with time and access to the failing test case is
going to have to debug this.  It should be possible to walk through the working
program (linked with ld) and the failing program (linked with gold) to see
where the behaviour diverges.
