Markus, can you see if arch/x86/boot/compressed/piggy.S is the same on a good
and a bad kernel?  It may also be worth comparing
arch/x86/boot/compressed/vmlinux between kernels.  (This is, confusingly, not
the same thing as vmlinux in the root directory.)

It's also probably worth trying to reproduce this with
CONFIG_X86_VERBOSE_BOOTUP=y.
