to clarify, i used the (latest) codesourcery toolchain on the above mentioned
openSuSE box, and could reproduce the issue.

the toolchain however is the one from the link of comment #19

Nick, would you care to take another look with the above mentioned toolchain?
(and after you've seen the bug, maybe updating the binutils version it uses)

Since i spent nearly 2 days of effort to hunt down the issue; it would be a
pity if this PR dies without getting the issue solved.
