The first is to allow the linker to remove unreferenced data on a per symbol basis as opposed to a per section basis. The second is to allow our customers the flexibility to place symbols in different memory regions without annotating the source code itself. Using common provides a lightweight mechanism to provide the same functionality as placing each symbol in its own section.
