Looks like I'm just too late with my test results.... you broke the interleave
feature. :-(

The "interleave size" testcase in my patch demonstrates the problem. Here's the
output:

$ xxd tmpdir/interleaved
0000000: 6163 0000 4141 4141 4141                 ac..AAAAAA

Those zeros are not meant to be in there.
