Could you please identify the commit which you think was "slipped in" or
"(maliciously?) snuck" into a bugfix release?  There are a few separate changes
referred to in this and related discussions, and it is not clear which one(s)
you are alluding to.

If you are talking about the change which broke use of --preprocessor to
specify a complete shell command, then AFAIU that change (commit 21c33bc) was
in response to a bug report, PR 26865.
