My bug might not be the same as this bug after all. I didn't know any better,
and my newlib was apparently built using -flto, which led to my symptoms.
Building newlib without -flto causes linking to succeed for me. I was told that
the problem is that LTO does... things to the builtin symbols, which can
confuse the linker (if I understood what I was told correctly).
