Did you try Alan's proposed solution of marking the section with "ax". Or is
there a reason why the section shouldn't be marked as such?

For the record, this isn't really a GDB bug, but a change in behavior for GAS.
Based on Alan's feedback, it looks like there is a way to force generation of
.debug_line information for .S files.
