Using Automake

Anyone gonna attempt to kick my virtual butt for converting CVS to use
Automake and checking the results in?  I've been using the conversion
for about four weeks now, updating and rerunning tests on all the new
code checked into the repository (which I'll grant hasn't been much)and
creating RPMs from the results of a 'make dist'.  I've also checked the
diffs of the results of a 'make dist' against an old one to cover the
platforms I don't have access to.  So far things look good and I kept
all the old targets intact.  Dists will build under NT as well.

I've been using the CVS automake (1.4a version 1.4a from the automake
repository), but I've built noarch RPMs with a couple of bug fixes of my
own which aren't strictly necessary but avoid some litter (

, but it doesn't keep the patches separate like the RPMs).  Automake
shouldn't need to be installed to do a build, either.

Part of my motive here is to see the code pass muster on Larry's test
machines and the changes can always be backed out...
