cvs-1.11 and IBM AIX 4.2

I built cvs-1.11 on about 10 UNIX flavors over the weekend, using
the canonical
./configure && make all check install
Most succeeded. However, on IBM RS/6000 AIX 4.2, the check failed like
this:

% env TESTDIR=$HOME/build/cvs-sanity make check
...
/bin/sh ./sanity.sh `pwd`/cvs
This test should produce no other output than this line, and a final "OK".
FAIL: basic2-64
make[1]: *** [check] Error 1

I am not a cvs user, just the installer, and after peeking at the
sanity.sh file, it is not obvious what the failure of this test
means, or what to do about it. The top-level INSTALL file
mentions successful ports to AIX 4.1 and 4.3, but not 4.2.

I'm going to try a second build, this time with the native C compiler
instead of gcc-2.95.2.
