Checkout Motorola 88K

I've compiled the most recent version of cvs ( 1.11.1p1 ) on a Motorola 88K
box. After solving some compiler difficulties I got a working version of
cvs.
Now I want to checkout my first sandbox on this system.
I tried, ... and failed.

No matter how short I made the initial dir name I always get the error:

cvs checkout: cannot write 71/pgm/KHVERG00.DAT: Name too long

Is this an internal cvs problem or is the error generated by the unix OS ?

Btw the message mentioned above ist just an example. In real life I get lots
of them.
Is there a running port for an M88K system anywhere ?

Rgds
