File name too long error

I'm using cvs 1.11.5 on Mac OS X 10.2.6, when I try to check out from a 
repository I get the following error

$cvs co rri/matlab
cvs checkout: Updating rri/matlab
cvs checkout: cannot create read lock in repository 
`/Volumes/:nmr/a3/data/cvs/rri/matlab': File name too long
cvs [checkout aborted]: read lock failed - giving up

The path does follow a couple symbolic links, but I wouldn't expect that to 
produce the error?
