You should always be able to delete a supposed "optimization"
and the behaviour should be unchanged.  For the same reason
you should always be able to put a "sleep(1)" anywhere without
breaking anything.  If something breaks, it is the optimization
that is incorrect.

Ok, I'll try to test it at work and see how it goes.

The bugs are gradually being squashed.  It's quite shocking
that CVS has managed to hide so many bugs for so long!  :-)
