Hmmm, I see your point.
More information is better. 
Some salesmanship helps too.

You may be pleasantly surprised if you apply the patch the result files
*really* shrink with exceptions noted:

        cvsnt.dsp               31709 ->        12302 BIG drop
        libdiff.dsp              3961   ->       3965 +4
        lib/LIB.dsp              4615   ->       4572 small drop
        zlib/zlib.dsp    5749   ->       3529 good drop

The size drop and redundancy removal make visual audits trivial.

It's hard for me to see a big time commitment required.  Applying the
patch is about 1 minute.  The compiles takes the same amount of time.
Back out is 4 file deletes, 1 update and 1 rebuild with actual time
varying with the machines compile speed.
