Yeah, we've known about this for some time.  In fact, there is a note
in the BUGS file:

    * Most of the remote commands are encountering assertion failures
when listing
      the toplevel of the repository (e.g. `cvs rlog .').  This
appears to be
      related to the symlinked CVS root fix.

I spent a few days trying to track this down a month or two ago but I
haven't had time to do anything about it lately.  The assertion isn't
the problem but the fact that the '.' gets left on the repository
string is.  That code is rather tangled though, and it wasn't easy to
spot where the problem is occurring.
