I agree. Just didn't know everything that would be necessary.

This is one of the items I didn't touch since it didn't raise any
compiler warnings here. It looks like it is mostly being used as a void
*, though I'm not sure why since there are a few direct void * decls.
It looks like there are a few unnecessary typecasts, with char * being
cast to __ptr_t before being passed as void * args to functions like
free() and mempcpy().

Anyhow, I'll make this change on your say-so but I don't feel qualified
to judge it myself and my web search isn't coming up with much.

It's okay to assume C89 or better for glibc? I knew it was correct for
GNULIB but I was unsure about glibc.

Okay. I've removed the check for the glob_pattern_p function as well
since I think I can assume that is implied by
_GNU_GLOB_INTERFACE_VERSION = 1.

Yeah, I misread the page in the Autoconf manual. You'd think I'd have
used these enough times to remember by now. Anyhow, I've fixed this
with the exception of HAVE_DIRENT64... I assumed you meant
HAVE_HEADER_DIRENT_H there and fixed that.

I was just trying to use the default return from AC_CHECK_MEMBERS, but
I've switched from that to d-type.m4 & updated it to look like this and
corrected all references:

/* When used in the GNU libc the symbol _DIRENT_HAVE_D_TYPE is available

Actually, I didn't remove it. I just moved it. I noticed it and moved
it into glob_in_dir() with the GLOB_ONLYDIR processing while I was
fixing a bug in the GLOB_ONLYDIR processing which only surfaced when
dirent.d_type was not being used. The new code should be more efficient
in that:

   1. When dirent.d_type is available and conclusive, it avoids the call
      to stat() for GLOB_MARK processing.
   2. When dirent.d_type is not available or provides uncertain results,
      it only calls stat() once for GLOB_ONLYDIR and GLOB_MARK
      processing if both are specified (previously stat() could be
      called twice).
   3. It avoids a second pass through the glob list by performing the
      dir test when the entry is first found.
   4. It avoids a call to realloc memory - it just allocates the extra
      space for the "/" when it first finds the entry and notices it is
      a dir.

There were several constructs in the orignal like the above. This is
the only one that was missing the ifdef and it broke compilation.
Regardless, I simplified it as you specified.

>>-  return (((flags & GLOB_ALTDIRFUNC)
>>-        ? (*pglob->gl_stat) (fullname, &st)

Restored to this:

return (flags & GLOB_ALTDIRFUNC)
       ? (*pglob->gl_stat) (fullname, &st) == 0 && S_ISDIR (st.st_mode)
       : __stat64 (fullname, &st64) == 0 && S_ISDIR (st64.st_mode);

Basically, I left the S_ISDIR() checks and restored the parens around
the bitwise-and. Since the S_ISDIR() change needed to be made anyhow
(see below), I left out the outermost set of parens around the returned
expression. This seems more consistent with the style in the rest of
the file, where the returned expression is not parenthesised like a
function argument, but I can restore these as well if you wish.

Yes, this is part of the bug fix I mentioned earlier. When
dirent.d_type was not available, link_exists_p() was being called on all
entries, even without GLOB_ONLYDIR specified, preventing glob() from
returning broken symlinks matching the pattern. I can understand not
wanting links that pointed to nothing to be returned as directories, but
nowhere in the POSIX specification nor elsewhere could I find any
mention that broken links should not be returned under normal operation.

So, anyhow, I changed the operation to be more careful about when it
calls this function, changed the name to is_dir_p(), and changed the
behavior slightly so that I could reuse it for the GLOB_MARK check for
directory status. Previously, when it was assumed that it would only be
called after files and other oddities had been filtered from the list,
link_exists_p() may have been sufficient to confirm that links pointed
at directories, but when it needs to select directories from a list
potentially containing things other than links and directories, a
successful return from stat() is not sufficient to make the call.
Finally, I was unsure what conditions d_type could == DT_UNKNOWN, but
the name makes it *sound* like a successful call to stat() should not be
considered as confirmation of status as a directory, so this may also
have fixed a bug. If it turns out that a successful stat() of an item
with d_type == DT_UNKNOWN does confirm directory status, then maybe two
functions are justified (link_exists_p() & is_dir_p()), but since it
would only save a single call to S_ISDIR(st), I would still choose the
current model for its simplicity.

Based on the comment you quote above about GNU CC stddef defining
__size_t empty, I used this in the #else /* !_LIBC */ portion:

#else /* !_LIBC */
# include <stddef.h>
# undef __size_t
# define __size_t size_t
#endif /* _LIBC */

Otherwise, my correction is as you specified, but if we can assume C89
in glob.c, why can't we assume C89 here and just #include <stddef.h>?

Basically because I was getting a compile error early on that tweaking
this fixed. I meant to go back, but missed it. Regardless, subsequent
changes seem to have resolved the probelm as I can now remove the 0 &&
and everything compiles.

Looks like glibc 2.3.5 comes with a sysdeps/generic/glob64.c.  That's
probably what some of the __USE_FILE_OFFSET64 cruft I'm still not
dealing with in glob.h is for. I'm still baffled about what exactly it
is supposed to do, much less how to integrate it, though.

Thank you again for your help. My revised patch is attached, as well as
the new diff against the glibc original.

Derek
