Check out in cvs

Hi,
 I am new in cvs ,So please help me out.
 I want to add file in cvs repository through cvs command but i am getting
following error in first step.

C:\Documents and Settings\username\work>cvs checkout project
cvs checkout: cannot find module `project' - ignored

But this project is present in C:\Documents and
Settings\ruchiras\work\project but check out a project giving an error.
