Leaving the escape character hanging around for the user to dispose of 
is rather unique among *nix tools, isn't it?  It has the effect that 
printf and date format strings and such must go in a shell script. I'd 
say that's more than an inconvenience, and it's not to be expected from 
a GNU tool.
