Cygwin du irrationality?

I don't know whether this is a known problem or I'm just failing to
interpret the results from du correctly. This is running on Win98:

address@hidden ~/.ncftp
$ du --version
du (GNU fileutils) 4.0

address@hidden ~/.ncftp
$ ls -l
total 31
-rw-r--r--   1 sholden  unknown       167 Feb  8 17:56 bookmarks
-rw-r--r--   1 sholden  unknown      4064 Feb  8 17:39 firewall
-rw-r--r--   1 sholden  unknown       358 Feb  8 17:56 history
-rw-r--r--   1 sholden  unknown       146 Feb  8 17:40 init_v3
-rw-r--r--   1 sholden  unknown      4977 Feb  8 17:53 log
-rw-r--r--   1 sholden  unknown       468 Feb  8 17:56 prefs_v3
-rw-r--r--   1 sholden  unknown     49581 Feb  8 17:56 trace

address@hidden ~/.ncftp
$ du -ab
512     ./init_v3
2048    ./firewall
2560    ./log
512     ./history
512     ./bookmarks
25088   ./trace
512     ./prefs_v3
31744   .

This seems difficult to reconcile to me: is du just unreliable under Cygwin?
