Follow-up Comment #2, bug #59190 (project gettext):
1. Would it be possible to provide an alternative means to extract the
translated string? If environment variables cannot work, then perhaps a file
descriptor? Without any means to do this, msgexec is not very useful.
2. The url you cite does not explain this - or at best does so only very
tangentially.
3. Should we really worry about portability to systems like MS? after all
https://www.gnu.org/prep/standards/standards.html#System-Portability says:
"As for systems that are not like Unix, such as MS-DOS, Windows, VMS, MVS,
and older Macintosh systems, supporting them is often a lot of work. When that
is the case, it is better to spend your time adding features that will be
useful on GNU and GNU/Linux, rather than on supporting other incompatible
systems."
