I verified the fix on a dozen of platforms, including the three BSDs.

If it still doesn't work for you, please show exactly the steps that
you did.

These were not intended for 0.22.1. 0.22.1 is meant to include
regression fixes and portability enhancements only (because I
want to minimize the risk of introducing other regressions).
