I think PCF fonts needs to be supported very quickly (that's what RMS
thinks too), because that is one of the mostly used fonts in the unix
world. However, please go ahead with GEM font support.

Yes. BDF has a kind of baseline - a zero point. Glyphs are confined to a
box, and the location of a corenr of this box with respect to that "zero"
is given. In fact there are two such points for vertical and horizontal
writing for a given font, but we are currently considering only horizontal
fonts.
