pdf2ps produces invalid .ps file

Colleagues,

I have an application which will batch generate pdf files (using PDF
writer), but not postscript files (if I need to generate 100 files, it
will prompt me for each filename if I select a postscript driver, whereas
it will automatically generate unique names without user intervention
using PDF Writer). Because of some incompatibility, this application does
not even allow Distiller to be selected from the list of printers (this is
all in Win NT). The problem is that I need to distribute pdf files using
some of the advanced features which Distiller provides - selection of text
disabled, prologue.ps etc.

So here is my solution, in concept:
- run the app, and produce a bunch of pdf files, using Writer
- run ghostscript to translate the pdfs to ps
- run Distiller, with various bangs-and-whistles set, over these set of
postscript files.

Problem: If I use ghostscript to translate pdfs and ps, I end up with a
file which ghostscript is happy to render correctly, but Acrobat chokes
on.

So whilst the above is a lengthy explanation, the basic query which
I am posting is this: I have some postscript files which seem to be
perfectly valid, but Distiller won't process them. What can I do?

If there is anyone who can shed any light on this issue, I would be
pleased to hear from you at my e-mail address: address@hidden

I can provide a copy of the pdf and ps files concerned, along with the error
message, but I thought it wise not to post to the whole newsgroup.

Thanks in advance,
