Dear, gift team!

I'm running gift-0.1.8 on a (very old) Pentium 90MHz under SuSE Linux 7.0. I
just thought it might be helpful to report some experiences I made:

When I try to connect to the server _before_ I add any collection it does a
segmentation fault. Since it's not likely that a lot of people want to run a
gift server without any collections this bug is maybe unimportant, but it
would be nice to catch the segmentation fault and print some useful error
statement.

Sometimes my server really seems to be too slow to react; Result sets are
sometimes just empty, if I try the same query again and again it works after
about 3 trys. This happens with both, Charmer0.2b and the online viper demo.
Maybe there are some timeout values I could adapt.

I encountered a little "bug" and I'm not sure if it's on the server side or
client side: When I connect to my own gift server
(gogo.bluedynamics.com:12789) with the online viper demo all images of the
result set have <img ... height="" ...> and aren't displayed correctly
though It works fine with Charmer0.2b. I just pasted the source code at the
end of this email. I don't know if my gift server suggests to use that
height, or if viper makes the mistake. The links are all okay, if I open the
images in a new browser window they are displayed right.

Uploading in the demo doesn't work. If this is on purpose I would suggest to
say something about it on the website, or disable the buttons. Otherwise you
might want to chmod the respective directories and allow uploading of
example images for everybody.

And finally I have two more questions:
Do you know if there is already a search engine that uses gift for searchng
images on the www?
Could you imagine to extend gift so it could search (grafical) t-fft's of
music or sounds as well?
