Double-checking about upgrading |

I have a Linux 2.4.19 system with glibc 2.2.5 and gcc 2.95.3. More often I am
finding programs that require glibc-2.3.x. So I'm hoping to download, build
and install glib 2.3.1 without overwriting the existing glibc.
I've read the glibc FAQ and understand that if I use the basic "./configure &&
make && make install" the new glibc will be installed in /usr/local and won't
clobber the libc.so.6 that is currently in /lib. Have I got that right?
I'm being a bit cautious because the last time I tried to upgrade to glibc
2.3.0 I downloaded a pre-built RPM for my distro and installed it. Of course
that clobbered the older glibc and my system was essentially useless; I had to
reformat and reinstall Linux.
Thank you,
