Isn't there a way to decide whether it is a dead link?

It is not opentoken() but parsers that call die().
It might be difficult to force plug-in parsers not to die.

From a Windows point of view, stat (from MSVCRT.DLL, but not
from VS2008 and later) succeeds on dead links (since it only
sees the link, not the target).  I suggest opentoken should
warn and ignore on failure, not die.
